The Historical Lexicon of Switzerland (HLS) is a scientific reference work that presents the history of Switzerland from prehistory to the present in a generally comprehensible form. The encyclopedia is published simultaneously in the national languages German, French and Italian.
The entries in the HLS are divided into personal articles, family articles, articles on places and rooms, and non-fiction articles. The selection of lexicon keywords is committed to a total histoire that aims to capture historical societies and spaces in their entirety. The latest developments in historical science are taken into account both in the selection of keywords and in the individual articles. The HLS incorporates expert knowledge from all historical sub-disciplines and from related fields such as church, medical, musical or military history.
The HLS Foundation, organised under private law in 1988-2016, has been part of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAGW) since 2017. The strategic management of the HLS is the responsibility of a commission of the SAGW.
