Germania Sacra

Die Kirche des Alten Reiches und ihre Institutionen

The task of the project “Germania Sacra” is to gain access and to publish the diverse and comprehensive written sources, which give evidence of the history of the Church of the Holy Roman Empire and its institutions. For this purpose, the source material of archives and libraries is published in the form of reference books. The reference books provide an extensive description of the dioceses, cathedral chapters, secular foundations and monastic houses of the Church of the Holy Roman Empire. They are set up according to a uniform structure. The project thematises church history of the entire pre-modern period from the 5th until the early 19th century. Today, the project’s main focus is on the description of the dioceses and cathedral chapters of the imperial church. The project especially profits from cooperation with volunteers, who evaluate the sources in archives and libraries on-site and draw up the reference books with the support of the editorial department in Göttingen.

The publications of the Germania Sacra are also freely available on the Internet in a digital form. With its 70,000 entries (as of May 2019) Germania Sacras Digital Index of Persons offers information on a broad spectrum of spiritual and secular officials, who were important for the history of the dioceses, cathedral chapters and monastic institutions of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era. Moreover, the project offers an online database on monasteries, convents and collegiate churches of the Holy Roman Empire.
