Keilschrifttexte aus Isin (Išān Baḥrīyāt) (Kampagnen 1–8)

From 1973-1989 Bartel Hrouda carried out archaeological excavations in Isin (modern: Išān Baḥrīyāt) in southern Iraq on behalf of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. From the 3rd to the 1st millennium BC, the sanctuary of the goddess of healing Gula dominated the metropolis, which was the capital of Babylon for centuries.

The excavators found above all old Babylonian (20.-18. Cent. B.C.) cuneiform texts: Ruler inscriptions, literary works (epics, hymns, incantations) and encyclopaedias, everyday texts such as letters, legal and administrative documents.

The edition (catalogue, hand copies and transliterations) notes the exact archaeological context for each clay tablet found in campaigns 1-8 (1973-1984). Thus not only the royal builders of the Gula Temple are identified. Personnel lists make it possible to locate the royal palace, and in almost every old Babylonian house cuneiform texts testify that writing, reading and arithmetic were practiced and learned, and that literature was also taught.
