Monumenta Germaniae Historica

Edition der Sachsenspiegelglosse

Digital Edition: http://www.dmgh.de/de/fs1/object/display.html?sortIndex=020:070

The Sachsenspiegel, written around 1225 by Eike von Repchow, is the most important and perhaps also the oldest comprehensive German legal book. This private record of the law in force at the beginning of the 13th century was widely distributed in a relatively short period of time, to which its scientific treatment in the form of explanatory notes (glosses) based on the Italian model soon contributed.

The first editor was Johann von Buch; however, depending on the current status of the legal development, the glosses were revised or reworked by later, also scientifically trained authors, which still needs to be thoroughly clarified in detail. This requires the publication of a text-critical edition of the oldest, and later also of the remaining Sachsenspiegelglosse(n). This task is assigned to the office site. In close cooperation with the Monumenta Germaniae Historica, it has completed the edition of the oldest text class in 2001 and is now ready for further editing due to its extensive material.
