Frühneuhochdeutsches Wörterbuch

Dictionary: https://fwb-online.de/

In 13 volumes, the Early New High German dictionary provides a lexicographic description of the Early New High German, i.e. the High German vocabulary from the middle of the 14th to the middle of the 17th century. This is a historical dictionary of language stages, which was conceived in the 1980s by Oskar Reichmann and has already been published in half.

Since the 1st January 2013, it has been continued as a research project of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. With its completion in 2027, the large gap between the dictionaries of the Middle High German and those of the New High German will be closed. In addition to its ever-growing printed version, the dictionary is also available online at fwb-online.de. It evaluates a corpus of about 400,000 pages with text sources from all sorts of texts from a time when America was discovered, book printing was invented and the Reformation began, a time of inventions and discoveries, early capitalism and early industrialization. In this way, the dictionary opens up and presents central cultural knowledge from one of the most important periods in German history. For historically working disciplines, this dictionary is an interdisciplinary fundamental work. It is addressed to linguistic and literary historians, cultural and humanities scholars, theologians and philosophical historians, to representatives of the legal and economic history, to specialist historians of all disciplines and, last but not least, to all those interested in cultural history as a cultural-historical “reading book”.
