Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919): Briefedition

The project, which is located at the Ernst Haeckel House of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, focuses on the edition of the entire correspondence of the evolutionary biologist Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) and thus one of the most important correspondences of scientific culture around 1900.

The archive of the Haeckel-Haus houses almost the entire personal and scientific legacy of Haeckel with correspondence, manuscripts, lecture notes and drawings. Ernst Haeckel's extraordinarily extensive and wide-ranging correspondence, previously published only in excerpts and partial editions, is one of the central source complexes for the history of the biosciences of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It documents Haeckel's scientific, cultural and ideological impact in a unique way. It includes statements on Haeckel's publications, offers statements on his research work, and provides material on his travels and the network of his scientific, cultural, journalistic, and political contacts.

In addition to Haeckel's biographical and scientific involvement, the edition of the Exchange of Letters is intended to make its significance for the professional, social and cultural consolidation of the natural sciences in Europe and beyond tangible.

The aim of the project is to make Haeckel's entire correspondence (letters and counter-briefs) available online in full text. In addition, a critically commented print edition of 25 volumes on aspects of correspondence of scientific and cultural historical significance will be published.
