Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768-1834) is one of the most important figures of spiritual life in Germany in the classical epoch around 1800, and his work continues to have a multidisciplinary and international impact up to the present day.

After the defeat of Prussia in 1806 and the dissolution of the University of Halle, where he had been professor of theology and philosophy and university preacher since 1804, Schleiermacher moved to Berlin at the end of 1807. There he first gave private lectures and then found his final sphere of influence as a pastor at the Holy Trinity Church (since 1809), professor of theology at the newly founded university, and academy member (both since 1810).

In the context of the biography, the academy project planned for 14 years will open up Schleiermacher's scientific, ecclesiastical, and political activities in the period of preparation for the founding of the Berlin University. Within the framework of the “Kritische Schleiermacher-Gesamtausgabe (KGA)” the traditional correspondence as well as the theologically and philosophically fundamental lectures on Philosophical Ethics and Practical Theology are edited. In addition, the daily calendars, which are particularly informative for Schleiermacher's biography and his networks in Berlin, are made available in a database edition. Supported by the Foundation of the Protestant Church of the Union (Düsseldorf), commentary volumes are prepared in parallel to the letter texts.

The academy project is part of the Preußen-Berlin Centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
