Wissenschaftsbeziehungen im 19. Jahrhundert zwischen Deutschland und Russland auf den Gebieten Chemie, Pharmazie und Medizin

Database: http://drw.saw-leipzig.de/

The project aims at an in-depth analysis and presentation of the scientific relations between Germany and the Russian Empire in chemistry, pharmacy, and medicine in the 19th century. Such a scientific study is not yet available. The research of german-russian scientific relations for the given period will provide insights into the development of science in Germany and Russia at that time as well as essential insights into the history of science under cultural, social, empirical, methodological, and theoretical aspects. The project as a whole is an essential contribution to the history of science in the sense of a historical science.

With the aforementioned guidelines, the project will be able to make a contribution to safeguarding cultural knowledge, making it visible, and using historical findings to help promote current cultural and scientific relations between Germany and Russia. In the context of the enlargement of the European Union, historical knowledge and understanding are of great importance if Europe is to be seen not only as an economic area but also as a cultural and scientific area. The proposed theme is of particular interest to several disciplines, in particular history, the history of science, and the history of natural sciences and medicine.

The initial situation in Russia at the beginning of the 18th century was marked by the incipient connection to the European West. Under Peter I (1672-1725) many foreigners, including numerous scientists, were invited to Russia. Catherine II (1729-1796) pursued new reform plans and settled numerous Germans in Russia. After the reign of Alexander I (1777-1825) in 1801, Russia's intellectual life was promoted by the founding of universities, after which numerous German university teachers and scholars came to Russia. Throughout the 19th century, science transfer between Germany and Russia played an important role. Whereas in the 18th century the transfer of science from western countries to the not yet advanced tsardom dominated, in the 19th century, against the background of political and social upheavals in Russia, the picture changed as a result of increasingly mutual enrichment.

Among the focal points of the project are the classification of historical facts in social and political contexts as well as the clarification of the role of universities, academies, scientific societies, and private scholars in the context of german-russian scientific relations.
