Geodesy comprises the surveying of the earth and the recording of its dynamic changes globally, regionally and locally; the analysis, evaluation and visualisation of the data and processes acquired together with other spatial information; the development of strategies and concepts for sustainable spatial development as well as the support of spatial decision-making processes and their realisation.

The Commission Geodäsie of the BAdW was founded in 1952 under the name Deutsche Geodätische Kommission (DGK) and represents university geodetic research and teaching in Germany. The committee has 45 full members who are university professors for all fields of geodesy as well as corresponding members and permanent guests. The DGK is divided into four research-oriented departments - Geodesy, Engineering Geodesy, Geoinformatics, Land and Real Estate Management - and a department for scientific teaching. Tasks include the coordination of research in all fields of geodesy in Germany, consulting, representation in international committees and public relations.
