Beethovens Werkstatt

Genetische Textkritik und Digitale Musikedition

By linking two new, reciprocally interrelated research approaches – Genetic Text Criticism and the Digital Edition – the highly complex dynamics of compositional processes in Beethoven’s oeuvre, for the investigation of which source tradition and indexing provide ideal conditions, are to be explored, documented, and reproduced in exemplary digital editions in a new way.

The aim of the project is to focus a central subject of musicological research in a multi-perspective way in order to obtain a differentiated and at the same time critically reflective picture of the text movements to be made visible in the media. The results to be expected are important for the evaluation of the entire compositional history and aesthetics of the 19th and 20th centuries, which are essentially based on Beethoven.

The project, which also combines two specialised institutions in close cooperation with the two research approaches, sees itself as a contribution to basic musicological research and as a project in which fundamental concepts and solutions are developed in the area of the interface between musicology and applied computer science.
