The project “Bernd Alois Zimmermann-Gesamtausgabe, Historisch-kritische Ausgabe seiner Werke, Schriften und Briefe”, jointly sponsored by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, is the first musicological edition project for music after 1945.
The project, which was developed in close cooperation with the music archive of the “Akademie der Künste Berlin” and the musicologist responsible for the composer’s legacy, focuses on one of the most prominent and internationally acclaimed German composers of the 20th century. His works not only aroused the interest of research at an early stage, but also established themselves in the repertoire outside the circles specialized in contemporary music. Zimmermann’s work owes its impact to an artistic approach that at the same time transcends genre boundaries and encompasses all artistic disciplines. They bundle the central compositional and aesthetic challenges of the 20th century, which are also based on contemporary history. Zimmermann’s technically extremely advanced and theoretically reflected method of composition, since the 1950s, allowed the integration of different musical styles, genres, and quotations from the most diverse spheres as well as a medial opening. The project thus offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative philological methods in the field of music.
Zimmermann’s work is presented in a hybrid edition, in cooperation with the publisher Schott Music, in which a digital, internet-based version is aimed at the demands of a deepened, source-oriented research interest. The print edition mainly provides information for musical practice.
