AGATE

The German Dictionary is a historical dictionary of the meaning of the New High German language. It contains the common German vocabulary from the middle of the 15th century to the present in alphabetical order. It was planned and started by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who are regarded as the founders of German studies. According to their imagination and model, the dictionary presents the history of German words, their origin, their relationship and their forms, and describes the landscape distribution within the German language area. The main task of the dictionary is to elaborate and describe the meaning of the words and their various uses in the tradition on the basis of selected documents, so that development, changes and variants of meanings are described and explained from the first appearance until today. The special value of the German Dictionary lies in the comprehensive vocabulary collection and the historical processing of the documents. It is a fundamental work of German word research. The first version (from A to Z) of the "German Dictionary" was completed in 1960. Since the volumes produced by the Brothers Grimm were published more than 130 years ago (Route A to F), it was decided at the beginning of the 1960s to provide for a revision in this area. In 1965 the first delivery of the new edition A - Abenteuer appeared. The new edition was to be based on the concept and presentation of the last volumes of the first edition. The company is supported by the Berlin-Brandenburg and Göttingen Academy of Sciences and has two research centres. The Berlin Research Centre has been commissioned to work on Part A - C, while the Göttingen Research Centre has been commissioned to work on Part D - F.
