Research Project, 1900–2010
A project of the
Academy, since 1992
Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities
The corpora of the ancient physicians (Corpus Medicorum Graecorum, Corpus Medicorum Latinorum) have the task of collecting the surviving writings of all Greek and Latin medical authors from the 5th century BC to the end of classical antiquity, including writings which have survived only in fragmentary form. The project provides historical-critical editions with translations (optionally in German, English, French, Italian) as well as comprehensive indices of names and terms. The editions may be extended by annotations, commenting on factual, linguistic and text-critical aspects of the texts. The task of the Berlin office is to develop the historical-critical edition and translation of all Greek and Latin medical authors as sources of scientific and cultural history as well as evidence of the Greek and Roman literature.
