Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde von Hoops

The project goes back to the Anglicist and natural scientist Johannes Hoops (1865 - 1949), who founded the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde with a four-volume edition between 1911 and 1919. The second, completely revised and greatly altered edition has been published since 1968. The Reallexikon attempts to develop a methodical and factual study on antiquity in Central and Northern Europe. A number of disciplines are involved in this task with the aim of providing an integrated presentation of the culture in this region from the middle of the first pre-Christian millennium to the Carolingian and Viking periods. The thematic classification "Germanic" is broad, therefore the handbook includes neighbouring peoples, pre-colonisation and continuities mainly in Central and Northern Europe for a period of about 2000 years. In the series "Ergänzungsbände zum Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde", results of symposia accompanying the handbook as well as individual topics are dealt with. The "Hoops" is published annually with two to three volumes.
