Uwe Johnson (1934-1984) is one of the most important authors of German in the era of two-state identity. His novels tell of German history in a context far beyond Germany. With his essays and articles, Johnson developed the position of a “public intellectual”. His highly literary correspondence is on an equal footing with the literary work, commenting critically on post-war history in an idiosyncratic manner.
Johnson’s writings and letters depict a piece of German intellectual and cultural history. Based on his legacy in the Uwe Johnson Archive, a complete historical-critical edition is compiled in three sections: Works, writings, and letters. The output will be printed and appear digitally. The book offers a verified version of the text as well as detailed commentary and digitally displays the text genesis, variants, sources, and a critical commentary.
The added value of digital processing lies in the synoptic linking of texts and comments as well as source material across departments. In this way, the basic concept of Johnson’s working method is made visible.
