Deutsche Inschriften des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit
The online portal Deutsche Inschriften Online (DIO) is one of the world's largest epigraphic portals due to the large number of medieval and early modern inscription articles and the corresponding illustrations. It is continuously updated with addenda and corrigenda - for example, when new finds appear. Some volumes of inscriptions are enhanced by interactive media, such as zoomable floor plans or a virtual tour, as is available for St. Michael's Church in Hildesheim. The geographical location of all the volumes of inscriptions is shown on an overview map. In addition to the (retro)digitised printed volumes, there is also a series of purely online publications (born digital publications). All inscription articles, introductory chapters and bibliographies have persistent identifiers (URN) and are therefore scientifically citable. A faceted full-text search can be used to find articles in the entire collection. Cross-regional overlaps in the content of all holdings have been collated into thematic bridges.
The aim of the DIO project is to digitalise the inscription volumes of the entire ‘Deutsche Inschriften’ series and make them available online. The project is being realised in cooperation with the Digital Academy at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz and the Digital Media & Computational Methods research unit at the University of Münster.
