Quellen und Forschungen zur Sächsischen Geschichte

Currently, the main focus of the project is the political correspondence of the Duke and Elector Moritz of Saxony. Duke Moritz (1521 - 1553), first Albertine elector since 1547, was one of the most important imperial princes and politicians in the 16th century. The edition lays the foundations for further research into the history of the country and the empire. Numerous - often previously unprinted - sources from more than 45 German and European archives on the history of the Empire and the Electorate of Saxony are published. The Saxon politics of this period, which finally led to the Peace of Augsburg (1555), had a considerable influence on further developments in the Empire, especially in constitutional and ecclesiastical matters. The sources document the foreign and domestic political actions of the Elector and his councils and show the changed political and religious attitude of a representative of the second generation of the princes during the Reformation. It also emphasize the significance of Moritz for church politics, universities and schools.

Two further projects are the edition of letters and writings of Thomas Müntzer and the files and letters on the church policy of Duke Georg of Saxony. The Müntzer Edition will bundle the findings of the intensive research on Müntzer of the past decades and provide a solid basis for future research. It is divided into 3 volumes: 1. writings and fragments, 2. correspondence, 3. sources. Duke Georg (1471 - 1539) occupies an outstanding position in the history of the Reformation among the princes loyal to Rome. The edition of the files and letters on his church policy forms an important basis for research into the imperial and provincial history of this period.
