Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) numbers among the central and most influential philosophers of Western intellectual history. Indeed, his works are now considered to be generally fundamental to modern thought’s self-conception. His global influence upon philosophy, literature, anthropology, psychology, and criticism of religion and culture can hardly be underestimated.
It is all the more astounding that there is as of yet no overarching commentary on his complete work reviewing respectively its philosophical, historical, and literary preconditions, and the history of reception of the books published by Nietzsche himself. This lacuna will be filled by the research project “Nietzsche Commentary” of the Heidelberg Academy of the Sciences.
The “Nietzsche Commentary” examines Nietzsche’s works within their historical context in 6 extensive volumes, thereby supplying a new academic tool for the understanding of Nietzsche’s thought.
Undertaking the editing and academically responsible for the research project will be the research centre leader Prof. Dr. Andreas Urs Sommer and also Prof. Dr. Katharina Grätz and PD Dr. Sebastian Kaufmann. While geographically based at the Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, this project possesses strong international ties.
