For the first time, the project aims to index and document the testimonies of the cults and rites of the Greek, Etruscan and Roman religions in a clearly arranged form. Literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence will be recorded in equal measure. This interdisciplinary approach will create a new basis for research in the field of ancient religion, which in recent times has been increasingly recognized as a basic phenomenon of ancient societies. The project also represents a further step towards the gradual cataloguing of all pictorial representations of Classical Antiquity. Parallel to a publication in a thematically structured series of individual volumes, a much more comprehensive database will be built up, which will serve as an extension of the project "Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae" (LIMC). The LIMC, which was also supported by UNESCO, involved 38 different nations. Most of them are now also collaborating in ThesCRA. The printing of the volumes is financed by the John Paul Getty Trust, which continues to support the organization of the database.
