The Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) is the historical-critical edition of all publications, manuscripts, and drafts as well as the correspondence of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. For the first time, work and legacy are documented here in their entirety and in authentic form, such as manuscripts on “German ideology” and “capital”. Furthermore, previously unknown journalistic contributions by Marx and Engels are identified through author analyses, which are published here for the first time. The correspondence between the two, including the letters of their over 2,000 correspondence partners to them, will be published in full. Finally, all excerpt books and notebooks are published, which open up previously unknown fields of work of Marx, such as his scientific studies.
The edition makes Marx’s encyclopaedic research program visible for the first time. The MEGA thus puts Marx research on a new footing and forms the basis for new text editions worldwide. The edition is edited by the International Marx-Engels-Foundation (IMES), an international network which, in addition to the International Institute for Social History Amsterdam (IISG) and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW), includes the Historical Research Centre of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Bonn and the Russian State Archive for Social and Political History (RGASPI) in Moscow.
The work of MEGA is carried out in international research cooperation, coordinated and managed by BBAW, where the secretariat of IMES is based. To date, 64 volumes of the edition have been published. In future, the edition will appear in large parts digitally and be freely accessible: Under “MEGAdigital” central texts on “Capital” are available, furthermore the correspondence as well as the excerpt books and notebooks are published there.
