AGATE

The research project Johann Caspar Lavater - Historical-Critical Edition of Selected Correspondence (JCLB) digitizes and records the inventory of the well over 20,000 letters from and to Lavater in order to edit selected correspondence in a web-based online edition and to make Lavater's entire correspondence synoptically accessible for research for the first time in all its complexity and scope. In cooperation with the Central Library of Zurich, the Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Trier, the IT Department of the University of Zurich and National Infrastructure for Editions NIE-INE, the project will open up significant impulses for Lavater research as well as the knowledge culture and knowledge structure of the second half of the 18th century. The presentation of the rich and interdisciplinary material of Lavater's letters will also make it accessible for current scientific questions. Lavater's philosophical, theological, physiognomic and pedagogical statements thus give rise to enlightening reflections and also current questions in interdisciplinary terms.
